When I started at Michelmores just a year ago, I knew that the firm was very active and keen for employees to keep fit and healthy. With a cycle club, running club and a gym in the basement, that much was obvious. However, I had no idea of the huge variety of sports that were to become widely offered.
In the last year, the firm has set up a sports committee headed up by myself and Alex McKenna. The aim is to use sport as a way of encouraging firm-wide integration, a healthy work place and yet another reason for staff to enjoy working here. In just a short space of time we already have a dedicated sports rep for netball, football, rounders, volleyball, golf, tennis, squash, and running!
To give a flavour of what’s been going on… every Thursday lunchtime a volleyball net is set up at the Exeter office for staff to go along and give the sport a go; a tennis league has been playing since July, with the semi-finals due shortly; the London office has combined their normal ‘Thirsty Thursday’ socials with sport, and the Bristol office has recently completed what is hoped to be the first of many office cycle rides.
The sports opportunities don’t stop there. Michelmores recently entered the Exeter Business Games which involve a wide variety of sports such as dodgeball, ping pong, clip ‘n’ climb and much more. The firm finished a respectable 5th out of over 20 teams!! The firm is also currently sitting in 2nd place in the Devon and Somerset Law Society Challenge Cup, with three events left to play. The next event is a football tournament held this Thursday, so we are keeping our fingers crossed for a great result!
Myself, Alex McKenna and each sports rep are always keen to provide more information about the sports on offer at the firm, and to help staff get involved. With the sports offered accommodating all abilities and welcoming new players anytime, we hope sports at the firm will continue to thrive, and continue to help staff integrate in a fun, active way!
