I found out about the opportunity of work-experience with Michelmores through Exeter College where I am currently studying my AS Levels which include law, biology, psychology and P.E. Since studying law I’ve acquired a real interest for it, especially the role of a solicitor. When I saw there was a chance I could spend three days gaining first-hand experience at Michelmores I instantly filled out an application form and, luckily, managed to secure a place.
Not scared to admit, I was very nervous before I started, as with me, and I’m sure many others, the idea of working alongside lawyers from a successful law firm scared me a little. However, within minutes these preconceptions disappeared, everyone was welcoming and pleased to see you, which really put me at ease and meant I settled in instantly. A networking lunch was also set up on the first day so we could socialise and get to know the people we were going to be spending our time with for the next three days.
During my time here I’ve been working in the private client team. Another preconception I had by people, which probably is true elsewhere, is the idea that you spend your whole time making cups of tea. I knew this wasn’t going to be the case for me as on my first day I had my supervisor making me tea! The days would fly by as work given to me was so interesting and stimulating. I would also be involved in helping them with their current work, which made me feel so involved and gave me a real feel for the job.
In-between working in our specific departments we attended workshops which were run by Michelmores’ solicitors on specific areas. This enabled us to gain knowledge on other departments in the firm, ask any questions we had, and get a feel for what Michelmores is all about.
I would without a doubt say I have learnt a lot during my time here and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you to everyone who took time from their busy schedules to help me, and to the firm for such a wonderful experience!
