Starting my journey as a Graduate Solicitor Apprentice, I knew balancing full-time work with studying for the Solicitors Qualifying Examinations (SQE) would be no small task. Now, having completed both SQE1 and SQE2, I have learned first-hand that while it is challenging, it is also hugely rewarding and entirely possible.
Looking back over the past two years, I have developed far more than just legal knowledge. The apprenticeship route allowed me to build practical skills, apply what I am learning in real-life and gain invaluable experience of life in a busy law firm – all while working towards qualification as a solicitor.
How working and studying go hand-in-hand
One of the real benefits of the apprenticeship route is how closely your studies align with the work you do day-to-day. The two do not exist in isolation and in fact, they massively help each other.
Applying what I was revising for the SQE to real-life matters in my seats made everything click so much quicker. Equally, the practical skills developed at work, such as drafting, client communication and problem-solving were directly transferable to the SQE2 assessments.
My advice to anyone going through the SQE alongside work would be to make the most this overlap. Look for opportunities in your day-to-day work to link back to what you are studying – whether that is asking questions, getting involved in new types of matters or recognising when a piece of SQE content crops up in real life. It not only makes revision feel less daunting but also helps build commercial awareness and confidence far beyond the exam itself.
Staying organised and managing the juggle
One of the biggest lessons I have taken from balancing work and study is the value of being organised. Managing deadlines, client commitments and revision required me to be proactive with my time and plan ahead wherever possible. I relied heavily on weekly to-do lists, structured study schedules and clear communication with supervisors about upcoming assessments or particularly busy periods.
There were times when this balance was difficult to maintain, particularly during revision period or when approaching exams. However, the culture at Michelmores has been instrumental in supporting me throughout this process. From understanding supervisors to colleagues who have shared advice from their own qualification journeys, I have always felt encouraged to manage my development in a way that works for me, while ensuring I continue to deliver for clients.
It is easy to feel like everything has to revolve around work and study, but life outside of law matters just as much. For me, keeping up with hobbies, making time for friends and family and getting outside for some fresh air (even just a quick walk) made all the difference.
Looking ahead
Completed both stages of the SQE while working has been challenging but also incredibly rewarding. It has given me not only technical knowledge but a huge amount of practical experience and skills that I know will serve me well as I move towards qualification.
