"I would give particular mention to Jennifer Ridgway. She is a pleasure to work with and ticks all of the boxes one looks for; being responsive, engaged, commercial and on top of the law. She is also a team player, in the broader co-counsel sense, which certainly makes working on cross-jurisdictional matters much simpler and straightforward. Highly recommended."

Jennifer is a Partner in the Private Wealth group. She is a recommended lawyer in The Legal 500 and is top tier ranked in Chambers High Net Worth Guide.

Jennifer joined Michelmores from a leading private client firm in London. Her clients are frequently international, although she also looks after a number of UK families and landed estates.  She acts for individuals and their families in all aspects of structuring their private wealth, including advising in relation to succession issues and tax planning.  For the families she looks after, Jennifer provides a holistic service, liaising with other advisers and involving other disciplines, such as agricultural work for landed estate clients and corporate aspects for business owners.

A significant part of Jennifer's practice is advising UK trustees and offshore corporate trustees in relation to their duties as trustees and providing UK tax advice.  Jennifer also has particular experience in advising clients who are non-UK domiciled in relation to pre-arrival planning and pre-deemed domicile planning.

Her advice to trustees and families means she is frequently involved in UK and offshore trust litigation and non-contentious applications to court.  She and the team also have particular experience in acting as independent administrator or trustee following a probate or trust dispute.

Recent Experience

  • Acting for a principal beneficiary in a very significant Cayman Public Trustee v Cooper blessing application (in connection with a c.£800 million distribution), including advising on complex UK tax matters (historic tax liabilities and tax consequences arising out of the proposed distributions), reaching a negotiated position enabling the blessing application to be made on an uncontested basis, and dealing with ongoing succession planning for the non-UK domiciled beneficiary family.
  • Acting for the trustees of a number of significant landed estates across the UK on a day-to day basis, including dealing with very significant development opportunities, advising trustees on all aspects of their duties, and next generation succession planning.
  • Acting for a UK-based (originally non-UK domiciled) family who wholly own a very significant UK business (value in excess of £1 billion) and advising on restructuring the family's existing Jersey trusts, transferring a number of business property relief shares into new English law trusts, and the creation of growth shares for the next generation.
  • Advising the litigation friend of a minor beneficiary in complex UK and BVI probate proceedings in connection with her late father's estate.  This involves complex UK inheritance tax, probate practice and domicile advice, working closely with litigation colleagues in relation to the very active, multi-jurisdictional proceedings.
