Michelmores collaborates as the legal partner for UK Space Agency backed Satellite Applications South West Centre of Excellence

The UK's Satellite Applications Catapult earlier this year extended its UK Centres of Excellence network to include the South West Centre of Excellence as part of a drive to broaden the country's regional engagement and support the sector's growth.

The Centres are co-funded by the UK Space Agency and are in direct response to the growing interest in how satellite data and technologies are helping businesses generate new ideas and solutions to grow.

Michelmores has been invited to be the collaborative legal partner for the South West Centre of Excellence, sharing expertise and support through legal workshops as selected companies move through the Centre's incubation programme. These 'expert clinics' will cover areas such as data protection, IP (licensing and copyright), corporate finance and contract law; and will be open to the companies selected by the Centre to develop the technical applications across the targeted maritime, agri-tech and e-health sectors.

Cathrine Armour, Centre Director for the South West Centre of Excellence said:

"As part of a collaborative approach to building a regional hub of excellence for satellite data applications, Michelmores' technical knowledge, combined with a focused and pragmatic approach on giving the companies in the programme the key information they need to succeed is refreshing. We are looking forward to working with them to make this a stand-out incubation programme for the country".

On 2 November 2016, the South West Centre of Excellence held its regional launch and networking event at its headquarters located at the famous Goonhilly Earth Station in Helston, Cornwall.  Ian Jones, Founder & CEO of Goonhilly Earth Station Ltd which bought the Goonhilly satellite station from BT in 2014, is already unlocking the huge potential at the 164 acre site. Ian's vision to create a multi-faceted space hub is well on its way. Not only has the site received Enterprise Zone status, but the company announced its 'Lunar Pathfinder Mission to the Moon' where, in partnership with SSTL and the European Space Agency, the Goonhilly team are creating the world's first commercial deep space mission.

Tom Torkar, Partner and Head of Michelmores' Technology, Media and Communications team based in Exeter said:

"It is fantastic to be involved with the Catapult and the Centre's partners here in the South West. We have been headquartered here in the region for over 125 years and to now be part of the future where tech applications are being developed using state-of-art satellite data to solve real world problems makes for exciting and challenging work. We are looking forward to working together with the companies on the programme and will ensure we do everything within our remit as the legal partner to help them unlock their commercial success."
