E-visas: the future of immigration documents

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) is in the process of modernising the current immigration system. The aim of the project is to make the UK safer, and reduce the risk of fraud, loss, and abuse of physical immigration documents.

Part of this process is the digitisation of immigration documents and the introduction of eVisas.  eVisas will replace physical immigration documents as of 1 January 2025, such as biometric residence permits (BRP), biometric residence cards (BRC), passport endorsements and vignette stickers. Recent UKVI guidance states that any migrant currently holding a physical immigration document must create a UKVI account in order to access their eVisa now. This should be done prior to 31 December 2024.

Securing an eVisa at the earliest convenience is advisable, with replacement BRPs only being granted in circumstances where an individual lacks physical identity documents, such as a passport.

While responsibility lies with individual migrants to ensure they obtain an eVisa ahead of the deadline, it is advisable for all employers to circulate advice and guidance to affected employees to ensure they obtain an eVisa prior to 31 December 2024. eVisas will be the primary permission document from 1 January 2025 and delays in obtaining an eVisa prior to this date could result in issues with travel and interactions with immigration officials at the UK border.

In the meantime, it is worth noting that until the end of 2024, individuals must continue to carry their physical immigration documents when travelling. Thereafter they should retain the card as it may be needed for future immigration applications.
