Michelmores’ corporate lawyer Andrew Feather and Elite category cyclist competed in the National Road Race in Abergavenny on Sunday.
Despite having to retire with cramp on the finishing circuit Andrew firmly established himself in the chasing group to the leaders on the initial 70 mile loop. The chasing group consisting of 15 riders broke away on the climb from Tintern Abbey and included Geraint Thomas (Team Sky), Alex Dowsett (Movie Star), David Millar (Garmin Sharp) and Kristian House (Rapha) to name a few.
“I managed to stay with the chasing group through to the finishing circuit in Abergavenny. Geraint Thomas broke away on the descent into Abergavenny and tried to solo across to the front group which was about two minutes in front. He eventually got pulled back. I did three laps of the finishing circuit in Abergavenny (there was a total of 10 until the finish) – a great experience with about 20,000 – 30,000 watching. However, I was suffering with cramp as a result of the repetitive sprints out of all the tight corners on the circuit and had to pull out. If I’d hung in for the remainder of the finishing circuits I may have got a top 20 finish”.
“Even though I didn’t finish, I was pleased to make it onto the finishing circuit. Only about 30 riders of the 160 starters managed that because of the strict time cut offs and they comprised the leaders and the chasing group that I was in. Only 19 riders finished in the end.”
Andrew Feather’s next competitive race will be the Premier Calendar Ryedale Grand Prix in Northumberland on 20 July 2014.
