Recently, we held our annual Graduate Presentation Evening. It’s a great opportunity for those who are thinking of applying for a training contact with Michelmores to come and check out our offices and have a chat with the partners, current trainees and other staff.
It was great to see a healthy turnout for the event. Most were undergrads from the University of Exeter, but we did have a few attendees studying on the Legal Practice Course, and others who were already paralegalling at other South West firms. Everyone is aware that obtaining a training contract in the current climate is becoming increasingly difficult and competitive, so I was pleased to see people making the effort to come along and network before submitting their TC applications.
The evening began with talks from the Training Principal, Emma Honey, Sacha Pickering, partner in the Insolvency Team and Tom Stenner-Evans, an Employment solicitor who trained with Michelmores, qualifying in 2009. Tom was keen on illustrating the health benefits of working for a South West firm as opposed to a London one – and had artificially aged two photos of himself, one to show his appearance after a training contract in the South West, and another after a training contract in London. As you can see, the London photo was rather less complementary!!
Following the talks was a tour of the office with the current trainees. I was glad that we were conducting the tour in pairs, as my knowledge of the gym location is at best sketchy!! I am not known at Michelmores for my love of exercise!!
To round off the evening was a great buffet in the boardroom and a chance to chat. The event was a resounding success and I would encourage those looking for a training contract to come and check out Michelmores at next year’s Graduate Presentation Evening!
We did get home eventually, but I think our little trip will be remembered as the most non-related travel-affecting weather incidents I have experienced in 24 hours!
