Michelmores lawyer and Head of Natural Capital releases industry-leading guide to payments for environmental services

Ben Sharples, a Partner in Michelmores’ Agriculture team and Head of the Natural Capital team at the Firm, has this week released A Practical Guide to Payments for Environmental Services. It has been published by Law Brief Publishing.

The guide is intended to be a helpful companion to those seeking to understand the many and varied opportunities that exist in the market for environmental services, in particular, lawyers, surveyors and consultants who are responsible for providing professional advice supporting the structuring of deals.

Author of the guide Ben Sharples, comments:

“The question that I am asked most regularly is ‘how do we commercialise these opportunities?’ The environmental services market is only set to grow with the huge and increasing amount of climate risk mitigation responsibility falling on landowners while balancing their own costs and making a living.

“The lawyer’s job remains that of sensibly drafting and structuring environmental service deals so that the practical benefits of environmental improvement can be delivered hand in glove with financial return, and this is what this guide aims to support.”

Ben is one of the first lawyers to engage with emergent policy on natural capital, having already completed numerous deals in this space and has been the architect in several novel and groundbreaking natural capital-related schemes that have since become embedded as the norm.

As Head of the Michelmores’ Natural Capital team, Ben advises clients on issues relating to carbon sequestration, payments for environmental services and sustainability. He is recognised as a Leading Individual in Legal 500 and Band 1 by Chambers & Partners. Ben was included in the The Lawyer Hot 100 2024 – The Lawyer in recognition for his natural capital work and sits on numerous advisory panels.

Michelmores’ Natural Capital team is at the forefront of advising clients and professionals on all elements of natural capital. The Firm’s multidisciplinary team come from backgrounds that include expertise in environmental, commercial, corporate, real estate, and planning law.
